The Ugly Ship

-

If you have been wondering what I have been up to these last few days - I am still cleaning out closets. I have most of it done now and all that remains is to put all the plastic boxes back up and in order. It has been amazing how much junk has been taken out to the garbage and we also have a huge pile for the Goodwill.

I did finally part with a ship that belonged to my Grandmother. It was REALLY ugly - a cow horn for the body of the ship and then the sails cut from another cow horn. Grandma used to keep the ship up on her TV for all to see. At one time it even had a light in it. lol, I guess so you could see it in all it’s glory.

I have held on to that ugly cowhorn ship for many years - tucked away in a box. I did ask the boys if they wanted it and both said no. Makes you wonder why people hold on to things - for the memories I guess.

I almost kept it. But I really didn’t want that ugly ship and had no intention of displaying it - ever. So, I figured that somewhere out there is a person who might be delighted with it.

So, no regrets. It deserves a good home with someone who will love it, like Grandma did.

  • I hold on to things like that too. Then, my closets are jam-packed with things that I never look at or use. I really need to do what you’re doing right now, but I’m too preoccupied right now to do it. Spring cleaning, I guess…that’s what it’ll have to be!

  • My dad a complete packrat. You should see the things that have accumalated over the years in his shop.

At times it’s nice to hold on to stuff, but then there are times you need to throw it away. So, yeah. You’re doing the right thing. I just dread the day when I have clean out the shop.

    ugh

  • My neighbours just did this, quite the job but it looked pretty nice in the end. I’m sure you were a busy little lady on that one.

    Cheers.

  • I’m wondering if I am the proud owner of your Cow horn ship. I just found this “one of a kind” ship at a indoor flea market in Fort Walton Beach Florida and fell in love with it.

I have this special place for it and everyone raves over it when they come in. I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder and just wanted you to know that it truly is, once again, loved.

If you have any more “history” (who took the time to make this ship), I would love to hear from you.

Just so you know, I paid $50 for it. I do chuckle to think what my children will think when they have to go through my things….that’s worth the $50.

  • Hi Carolyn. lol, I wonder if it is the same ship?

Grandma’s ship had to be at least 40 years old. My Grandfather was a Merchant Marine and brought it to her from Italy.

I am glad that the ship is once again loved and displayed. Grandma and Grandpa would have liked that!
