She crossed the road, early this foggy morning. Her long and graceful legs swiftly carrying her to safety. As soon as I saw her, I looked to the woods from where she came - expecting that she might not be alone. And sure enough, close behind, 2 followed without hesitation. A beautiful doe and her babies.

To me, there is a certain magic in a foggy morning. And if you get up early, you might get a glimpse of creatures not often seen by light of day. A mother raccoon with 4 babies heading back to a warm nest in a log or a doe and her young heading home. It’s a good way to start the day.

I think about how a wild mother teaches her young. She gives a command and the youngsters follow her. They must do as they are taught because their very survival depends on it.

Once along the lake there was a den of nutria. The mother felt threatened by our presence and determined to move her babies. She swam out of the safety of her home, dove under the water and popped up far on the other side of our boat. Then, in the silence she made a call - just once. And one baby immediately came out - doing exactly what she did. Quickly out, dive into the water, pop up safely by Mom. We watched as one by one she called them, all 6.

There was never a hesitation after her call - not a “why do I have to” or “I don’t want to go now” or “I’ll do it later.” No arguments at all.

How different it is with human children. Sometimes it seems that no matter what you say, they will have a different opinion. And even though my boys were pretty good - there have been days that I wished I was a wild Mama. lol
