Old Time Diners

Mom's Diner Kitchen WareDo you remember the old diners with their stainless steel exteriors and brightly colored vinyl cushions on the bar stools and booths? These were small places where the waitress knew you by name and greeted you with a cup of hot coffee in a white mug.

It was almost a given that you would order a piece of pie to go with your coffee. And there on the counter to tempt you was the glass pie rack filled with home style pies - blueberry, apple, lemon meringue, coconut creme, etc… And you got a big slice too!

If you sat long enough, someone you knew would drift in. Some were old friends and some you just knew from the diner. People from another booth would join in on your conversation or wave a greeting to someone newly arrived. It didn’t matter, at those old diners everyone was family.

With their simple menus, the daily special and friendly conversation, the diners of old had a certain charm not often found in today’s coffee shops. So, let’s have another cup of coffee, let’s have another piece of pie…

  • We lived in the country so I’ve never been in many diners but I loved the village pub atmosphere when I lived in England for a few years as a teen. They served meals, and teas, coffees, as well as drinks. Everyone from the grandmas to the kiddies dropped in.
